3d Typefaces FAQ
⁉️
What is a 3d typeface anyway?
A 3d typeface — as I understand it — is a collection of digital 3d models of individual glyphs which can be used in 3d apps like Blender or Cinema 4D to set / use text in 3d environments.
👷
What can I use these for?
Typical use cases would be 3d type for digital or printed 2d media, 3d type in AR or VR experiences, use in games or as base models for 3d printing.
📂
Which file types do you provide?
All my current typefaces come as fbx files. Each typeface is delivered as a single fbx file containing individual, named meshes for every glyph. I decided to use fbx files for the time being as they are platform agnostic and supported by a wide array of 3d apps.
🗄️
Can I get a different file format?
If your preferred 3d program doesn’t support fbx files, please get in touch and we’ll figure it out.
🎁
Are your models UV unwrapped?
No. Since the ideal UVs usually depend on the specific use of a 3D model, I leave this step up to you.
🐍
Do your models include materials?
No. I feel that the right material has to be determined within the context of the specific project. So this is another decision I leave in your hands.
🔡
How about typesetting?
For now, my typefaces are delivered as 3d meshes only, so you’ll have to typeset, space and kern manually. I am looking into developing plugins for popular apps to allow for easier typesetting but for now manual is the way to go.
🧑🏭
I need to make changes to a typeface or a custom typeface but don’t want to do it myself. Can you help?
I am happy to assist with customization and bespoke designs. Please send me a message with information about your project and budget and we can talk details.
⚖️
How about licensing, what are the terms?
I currently release all my 3d typefaces under the Free Art License (FAL 1.3).
tl;dr:
you can freely use, copy, distribute and modify my 3d typefaces, both for personal and commercial projects. Credit is required. The license needs to stay attached and modifications may only be released under the same or a compatible license.
The full version of the license can be found here. There is also a copy of the license included in every typeface download. Enjoy :)
